Malmo, Colon residents react to bank robberies

A quiet country town of about 120 became the scene of a robbery and police chase, the likes of which haven't been seen in the small Saunders County village.

"There was a bank robbery in Malmo — that's right by where we've been working. Oh man — crazy,” said Jesse Ichelberger, who witnessed police pursuit.

The suspects walked into the Home Security Bank on Center Avenue, stealing an undisclosed amount of cash before leading law enforcement on a chase through Saunders County.

"Heavy pursuit — lots of cop cars chasing a white car. And we really didn't know, so..." Ichelberger said.

The doors at Home Security Bank are locked, and a sign on the door reads: "Please knock on the door/window (to be let in)."

Less than 20 miles down the road, the town of Colon is recovering from a similar offense; State Bank was robbed in late September.

State Bank also has a sign posted on their doors saying the building is locked. Bank employees told 3 News Now, through their glass, "No comment."

The townspeople in Malmo and Colon did not want to speak on camera, but did say they're surprised about the robberies and are shaken up.

The FBI says they can't comment whether the two bank robberies are related, adding that Wednesday's incident is still under investigation.
