President visiting Council Bluffs amid political divide

President Donald Trump is set to visit the metro, and some wonder if the political divide can be mended.

For the fourth time since 2015 and the first since being elected, President Trump visits Council Bluffs for an evening event at the Mid-America Center at about 6:30 pm.  Doors open at 3:30 pm.

There are several mid-term races that are being focused on in Iowa and Nebraska.

UNO Assistant Political Science Professor Gregory Petrow says the divide is growing because elected officials are voting more along party lines, and the middle ground is disappearing or almost gone at this point.

"I would actually argue and my belief is that we shouldn't try to come back to the middle, we shouldn't try to cooperate anymore we should just recognize that we are basically two parties and two ideologies with different views and we should just hash it out and we should compete because it gets a lot more people engaged in the electorate," Petrow explained.

Petrow says the divide would be dangerous if the respect for the democratic norms declines, but adds that public opinion for the process hasn't changed.
