GRETNA, Neb. (KMTV) — Three are dead following a crash on I-80 Sunday afternoon near Greenwood.
Update: Investigation findings released
The crash involved four vehicles and led to the closure of a stretch of westbound lanes from Gretna to Waverly. The interstate re-opened at 4:15 p.m.
Nebraska State Patrol learned of the crash, which happened in the westbound lanes of I-80 at mile marker 422, at approximately 11:12 a.m.
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene with five others transported to Omaha hospitals. Two of those transported were in critical condition.
One critical patient has since died.
All patients were taken to Nebraska Medical Center and CHI Bergan Mercy, according to Mark Sobota, Greenwood Fire & Rescue chief.
The names and ages of those involved are being withheld pending family notification.
All three fatalities were from the same vehicle, along with three of the injured parties, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
Weather was a primary factor in the crash.
No helicopters were able to fly, so various emergency crews responded from Greenwood Fire & Rescue, Ashland Fire & Rescue, Murdock Fire, Gretna Rescue, Louisville Fire & Rescue, Nebraska State Patrol, Cass County and the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
