Construction is underway on the old Dundee Theater renovations at 50th & Dodge, and the city is closer to giving it the final approval.
Councilman Pete Festersen says on Tuesday the council will discuss a rezoning of the property, which in his opinion is a final blessing from the city.
"It's really exciting it wasn't a foregone conclusion, we worked hard to get to this point. Everyone has a story they grew up as a kid coming to a movie here and enjoying the neighborhood and we're excited to see that continue in such a high quality fashion," Councilman Festersen explained.
In 2013, the theater closed when the owners ran into unexpected repair costs. Film Streams has taken it over and raised 85% of the 8 1/2 million dollar project. It will keep the existing theater and add a 25 seat microtheater. Moviegoers will have to go through the back entrance instead of the former entrance on Dodge St.
It is scheduled to open by the end of 2017 in time for the premiere of Alexander Payne's movie "Downsizing" which was partially shot in Omaha.
