Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilbur released new information in a Council Bluffs officer-involved shooting in October.
Wilber spoke to the media to discuss the investigation after an Officer Ben Lake was forced to open fire on a suspect on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Bomgaar’s off of Kanesville Boulevard.
He said Lake told him he feared for his life and those around him in the store's parking lot when he fired six shots at the suspect, Adam Thomas.
Investigators said the Thomas, was taken into custody at the store after being suspect of fraud, but he escaped, hitting an officer with a truck as he did so.
“The initial officer fired several shots in an attempt to stop the threat, but Mr. Thomas was able to flee the scene eastbound,” Council Bluffs police said in a previous press release.
Thomas, who was not hit by any of the gunfire, was arrested two days later at an Omaha home.
Wilber says, after reviewing all the evidence, he has dropped the initial charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault against Thomas.
