COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (KMTV) -- — A coin shortage is being felt right here in the metro, and some major retailers are making changes.
The Federal Reserve says the COVID pandemic has been causing a nationwide coin shortage for weeks. People aren’t circulating as many as normal.
Both Walmarts in Council Bluffs are only taking credit and debit cards to cut down on cash usage.
Wendy Larsen says she went shopping for her mother, who only carries cash. She says Wednesday she couldn’t purchase an item for her and found out at the register.
“I told my mom I was so mad last night, and I’m still a little upset about it. I told my mom something has to be done about it,” said Larsen.
In some cases the Council Bluffs Walmarts are telling people before they come in or putting up signs.
Walmart did not return a request for comment on Thursday.
