Crash sends 5 teens to hospital, one critical

Five teenagers are recovering after a crash on I-680 and West Dodge Road. Omaha Police Department says at 11:46 Saturday evening a 2005 Chevy Malibu was traveling northbound on I-680, went past the exit ramp for eastbound W. Dodge Rd.

The Chevy attempted to cross the grass median at highway speed and lost control. The Chevy spun, crossing the traffic lanes of the off-ramp and eventually struck an exit sign. All five restrained occupants were transport to trauma hospitals (three to UNMC, two to CUMC) by OFD Medics. The driver, who had to be extricated by OFD, has serious, life threatening injuries.

The driver was identified as:
Jawaun  L Gaines
Omaha, NE
Gaines is being treated for a brain bleed and puncture wounds to both lungs. He is in critical condition.

The other occupants were identified and had the following injuries:
Wyatt Metoyer (3-3-97, Omaha)- arm pain
Terreion Toney (3-20-98,Omaha) back & chest pain
Malik J McCroy (4-8-97, Omaha) complaint of pain
Jacobe E Hollingsworth (3-18-97, Omaha) complaint of pain

The I-680 northbound exit to W.Dodge Rd was closed until 0140 hrs. The Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska Department of Roads were on scene to assist.

Speed is a factor in this crash.

This crash remains under investigation.
