Police say charges are pending against an 81-year-old driver after a crash sent one person to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

The crash happened just before 1 p.m. at the intersection of 72nd and Pacific streets.

Investigators say 81-year-old Arthur Nicholson, of Storm Lake, Iowa, was trying to turn left onto northbound 72nd Street from eastbound Pacific Street when he collided with an oncoming pickup truck.

The force of the crash spun Nicholson’s Buick sedan into a third vehicle stopped in the southbound lane of 72nd Street, according to police.

The front seat passenger of the sedan, 79-year-old Donadee Nicholson, was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries.

Arthur Nicholson and the driver of the pickup truck, identified as 55-year-old Bernard Lohaus, were not injured.

Police say a driver distracted by the scene of the crash caused a second one nearby.

They urge drivers to watch for slow or stopped vehicles near accident scenes.
