A record number of diapers arrived at the Open Door Mission Monday, following a weekend diaper drive.
Our radio partners at Channel 94.1 say the three-day diaper driver collected a record total of 858,818 diapers, which beat last year’s number by 250,000.
Candace Gregory, with the Open Door Mission says the diapers will serve those in need at the Lydia House.
“Fifty percent are victims of domestic violence, so when they come in off the streets, many times they are in the back of a police cruiser. They have nothing with them. And it’s survival. So when you can meet someone’s basic needs, a lot of times that gives them the hope that they don’t have to go back to that unhealthy lifestyle,” Gregory said.
The diapers will also supply homeless prevention programs. The organization has three diaper depots for families in need:
