According to the National Fire Prevention Association, fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires, 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and 16,900 other outdoor fires each year.
Additionally, there are 11,900 fireworks related injuries each year, with more than half of those being extreme.
The NFPA recommends consumers don't use fireworks, but if you do the National Council on Fireworks Safety recommends these tips:
- Read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
- Only let responsible adults supervise all firework activities.
- Wear safety glasses.
- Do not drink and use fireworks.
- Always have a bucket of water nearby.
- Never relight a "dud" firework.
- Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
- Only use fireworks in outdoor, clear areas.
