Police booked a suspect into custody for allegedly stabbing his brother early Sunday morning, according to a police report.
The report states officers questioned Courtney Moore, 28, after responding to call to investigate a cutting near 26th and Decatur streets at 3:28 a.m. Dec. 27. When Omaha Police arrived, they pronounced Johnny K. Moore, 34, dead at the scene.
Jeff Scott, a friend of the victim, says family members told him the brothers were at a gathering when police say Courtney Moore stabbed his brother.
It is still a shock to me, Scott says.
“That was my best friend,” he says. “We did a lot of things together.”
For 17 years, Scott says him and Johnny, otherwise known as Jay to him, made music and toured the country together.
Through the various stages of life, he says they were there for one another.
The long-time friend says he saw Moore, a father of three young children, the other day.
What is even harder to comprehend, Scott says, is that Moore's younger brother is the alleged suspect.
The brothers’ mother is currently in town for the holidays from Louisiana, where they are from.
Scott says the mother, who also has two daughters, lost two sons this morning.
The friend says he, too, lost something today.
“That's my brother. I know who he was. I know what he was doing. I know what was on his mind,” Scott says. “Anytime he was around I could always count on Jay to be there. Trust and believe."
Courtney Moore is now facing charges for first degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
The investigation is ongoing.
