Students at Gering High School won $150,000 in technology for their school.

The students have been working all year to develop a drone-powered spraying system to target weeds, as an effort to decrease chemicals on crops. Due to their hard work, the school was named a national winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest.

The contest is a $2 million competition that encourages teachers and students to solve community issues using STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math).

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) met with the students Wednesday during their trip to Washington, D.C., for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national awards luncheon where they were selected as one of the three national award winners out of thousands of entries and 10 national finalists.

"It is exciting to see young innovators from western Nebraska-especially my alma mater-recognized nationally for their ideas on how to advance agriculture," Congressman Adrian Smith said. "I applaud these students and their teacher, Mr. Justin Reinmuth, for the hard work and dedication they put into this winning project. Congratulations on this well-deserved award."
