GLENWOOD, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Human Services announced on Monday that the superintendent of the Glenwood Resource Center has been fired.
Dr. Jerry Rea had been on administrative leave following the start of a federal investigation into civil rights abuses involving medical experiments at the facility, which houses Iowans with intellectual disabilities.
Among the allegations was one that residents at the facility were being used for a study on sexual arousal.
The firing was effective as of Monday.
Below is the letter sent to Rea informing him of the decision:
December 30, 2019
Dr. Rea,
This letter is to inform you that effective today, December 30, 2019, you are being discharged from employment with the Department of Human Services. This action is being taken as a result of a mounting list of disregard for policies and procedures.
Consistent with paragraph 21 of your lease agreement, you are hereby given notice of the need to vacate the premises no later than 30 days from today. During this time, you are not to be on the grounds of the Glenwood Resource Center where individuals are served or administrative services are being delivered.
As the Department of Justice investigation is ongoing, it is our expectation that you will remain cooperative throughout the process. Please provide your contact information so we may reach you as necessary.
