Candidates for Governor discussed their views the State Corrections Department in Nebraska at a debate at the Nebraska State Fair.
Gov. Ricketts said the state has ended co-incarceration and is working to expand capacity and programming. He also said corrections have been underinvested for a long time in Nebraska. Ricketts specifically noted the success of the Five Ventures program which has seen 94 percent of its graduates get jobs.
His Democratic challenger Bob Krist said the Corrections Department was a debacle, sighting the 30 percent turnover rate within the department. The State Senator also said the head of the department, Scott Frakes, would be "packing his bags to Washington" if he was elected Governor.
