LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is closing I-80 west of I-76 to the Wyoming line at 6 p.m. Wednesday due to predicted severe weather.

A blizzard bringing ice, heavy snow and high wind into western states this afternoon led NDOT to make the decision to close the stretch of the interstate. Timing and closures are shifting as a result of possible road closings in other states due to shifting conditions with the storm.

NDOT will continue to monitor the situation and respond as necessary, a press release says.

Travelers are encouraged to remain alert and aware by checking on travel conditions and closures using 511. The system is available at all times on phone by going online, using Nebraska's 511 app or by dialing 511.

NDOT also has a Plow Tracker that shows road conditions in real time. Access that website here.

Motorists are reminded to ensure everyone in their vehicle wears a seat belt and children are in a safety seat. Don't use cruise control in wet or snowy weather and keep a full tank of gas.
