Icy conditions hit Omaha metro on...

Posted

Max Morley walked the icy sidewalks along the Gene Leahy Mall Thursday night. His thanksgiving walk capped off a big day for the New Zealand man, visiting Omaha with his family.

“It's cold. Believe me, It is cold!” Morley exclaimed.

The freezing rain contributed to several Omaha event cancelations Thursday, including the Kick off of the Holiday Lights Festival downtown.

Road temperatures dropped with the mercury. As night fell, Omaha Police were warning of slick spots, especially bridge decks. That contributed to slower Interstate 80 traffic.

“It's freezing,” said Tara Cooley, as she walked with Morley. “I don't know if you've noticed, but there's ice on the ground.”

The Omaha street department brought in 100 crews and contractors to tackle the slippery streets. Their road salt assault was in full-swing by 4 p.m. Thursday. Even then, cars and trucks had trouble navigating some streets and hills across the metro.
