An Iowa company is betting big on marijuana in the state.
Right now, Med Pharm is building a multimillion-dollar growing and processing facility, which will supply the medicine for Council Bluffs' medical cannabis dispensary.
The facility is the only one licensed in the State of Iowa to manufacture medical cannabis, so all of the state's marijuana will be grown and processed there before going to the five cities around the state with approved dispensaries.
The company is in phase one of the $10 million project, but it was designed with science in mind. Everything from humidity to temperature to bio-security is accounted for to optimize the growth of the plants.
At any point in time, Med Pharm expects to have around 250 marijuana plants in different stages of growth. But first, they need to select the seed type.
"We'll be getting in quite a few different plants and at that point in time we'll select the plants which are going to produce the most oil, the most CBD, THC," Nick TeBockhorst, a plant production associate said, "and those will become the plants we grow and turn into medicine."
