LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — Family, friends and community members are paying their respects to the fallen Lincoln Police Department officer.

Mario Herrera was a dedicated family man to his wife and four children, a man of faith and a protector as an officer at the Lincoln Police Department.

Father Jamie Hottovy, Mario's pastor, says he was dedicated in all aspects of his life including his role in the community.

"There are so many families that are close to Mario and his family,” Father Hottovy said. “This is just to give faith and hope and support in this challenging situation."

St. Teresa Catholic Church held a candlelight vigil to remember Officer Herrera.

Melissa Brock, a close friend to the Herrera family, says Mario was a pillar of the community, and those who knew him best would say he had a great sense of humor.

“I’m just going to miss him teasing my kids and playing with them and just being fun to be around,” Brock said. “I'm going to miss seeing him, his presence was a comfort.

Many say it's been difficult to watch the Herrera family struggle, adding they will be here for them through the grieving process.

"We are all there for them, even though it's hard and they want their space as a family,” Madison Hodge said.
