OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - The man charged in a fatal crash is still missing, two months since he was able to bail out of jail for $5,000.
Eswin Mejia, 19, is charged with motor vehicle homicide after prosecutors say he was drunk and racing when he crashed into Sarah Root's car at 33rd & L St. the night of January 31st. Root, 21, had graduated from Bellevue University earlier that day.
Mejia, an immigrant from Honduras, has skipped several court dates since leaving jail. Senator Ben Sasse (R, NE) says Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents did not do enough to ensure Mejia would remain in custody and not flee.
ICE Director Sarah Saldana says ICE agents were limited by law and Department of Homeland Security policies in what they could do to keep Mejia in Douglas County Jail.
Sasse has called Saldana's responses to his inquiries "bureaucratic nonsense".
