OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - Millard Public Schools announced on Monday that they plan to open on August 10 with all students in school.
"We are planning to start school on August 10," Superintendent Jim Sutfin said in an e-mail to parents. "As we move forward, we are all going to have to be flexible and recognize that we may have to reduce enrollment to 50% capacity or even go 100% remote at some point during the year. It will depend on the levels of the virus and potential for community spread. As of today, we are still planning on a 100% opening, but there is certainly the possibility of needing to make adjustments if COVID-19 spins out of control."
Millard Public Schools said a concurrent remote option will be offered. It would mean students learn from home while the rest of their classmates attend school. Some courses at the secondary level won't be available for remote learning.
To request concurrent remote learning for the start of the school year, parents need to complete this form by July 27. Students learning remotely won't be able to participate in activities or athletics.
"I firmly believe the best educational opportunity exists with students in class under the direct supervision of a teacher," Sutfin wrote to parents. "However, I also understand the current reality and the concern people have regarding the pandemic."
Millard Public Schools said they have developed a colored dial in conjunction with local health experts. It will help dictate educational plans such as how many kids are in school or if they should shift to a full remote learning plan. The district says they are currently in yellow status.
The district said they have seen coronavirus cases among student athletes and student performers. Those affected have quarantined for 14 days.
"If we don’t all work together and make decisions to social distance, wear masks, and protect ourselves from this pandemic, we may see school, sports, and activities shut down before they even start," Sutfin wrote. "Please help us get our schools open and keep them open by following the health guidance."
The school district has put together a FAQ page for questions related to the upcoming school year.
