According to the CDC each day more than a 1,000 people are injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. One Omaha mom is fed up with what's happening on our roadways and decided to take matters into her own hands.
Everyday Cura James carts around precious cargo and the mother of two is making that very clear.
About a month ago James used window paint to cover her Pathfinder in anti-distracted driving messages.
“When you're a mom, you actually realize everything that is happening around you while driving,” said James.
James says she was tired of getting in her SUV and having to fear for her family's life while driving the streets of Omaha.
“It's ridiculous. We shouldn't have to be dying because people are texting on their phones,” said James.
The texting, playing Pokémon Go and distracted driving had this mom at her wits end, so she decided to make a bold statement.
“I’ve had people drive-up on the side of me to give me a thumbs-up and others honk,” said James.
Overall the response has been positive. But, James has had some critics.
“I’ve been told it’s tacky. If you don't like what's on my car, don't like it then. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you don't like it, keep driving,” said James.
“Are you ever going to wash this off,” asked Reporter Emily Szink.
“No, not until the message gets out,” said James.
A message that nothing is more important than your family.
James says she hasn't been pulled over for the paint and as far as she knows it's legal. Some Omaha Police Officers even gave her the idea to add “stop playing Pokémon Go while driving,” to the side of her SUV.
