A change in federal tax laws has county treasurers offices across the Omaha metro seeing an uptick in homeowners wanting to pay property taxes early.

Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing says his office has been fielding phone calls and visits from homeowners wanting to pay early, and others with questions.

The new laws will put a $10,000 cap on federal tax deductions from property taxes. Also ending next year is the benefit of itemizing.

Homeowners can pay their 2017 taxes now; however, the bills do not become delinquent until March 31 for the first half and July 31 for the second half.
