At around 2 a.m. Monday, authorities got a call about a Nissan Rogue driving East in the Westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Waverly.
The Nebraska State Patrol says minutes, that the vehicle crashed head-on with a GMC truck and hit another vehicle near the Greenwood exit on I-80.
The woman driving the wrong way, 23-year-old Ashley Chinana of Niobrara was pronounced dead at the scene.
NSP Captain Lance Rogers said they're investigating why Chinana was driving the wrong way, but right now, they have no information on any sort of impairment.
Four other people, Cary Chafin, Rhonda Chafin, Sanda Mann and Jack Mann were taken to were taken to Lincoln area hospitals, but neither Bryan LGH or St. Elizabeth said they had any of the patients.
People in the area couldn't believe what happened.
"Shock, especially for something that's kind of close to where I live," one said.
"My reaction is 'oh my god that's crazy people,'" another said.
The Interstate was closed for almost five hours Monday and the State Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.
