OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The United State of Women is a national organization with one major goal in mind, which is to help women in all communities thrive.

The group hopes to build on momentum gained from the record-setting number of women elected across the country.

The organization works to provide tools and connections to help local nonprofits empower women.

Precious McKesson is one of 80 ambassadors throughout the U.S., and the only one from Nebraska.

She says the goal is to give women a voice.

"We'll be able to really work closely with our legislature, down in Lincoln so different bills that we maybe want to present and bring to some of the women who are our women senators, so I'm really excited to bring those groups together especially on a national level," McKesson said. "We can kind of get the word out and really put them in the spotlight of what they're doing here in Omaha."

Last year, The United State of Women had less than 30 ambassadors around the country. It's up to 80 now.

McKesson says the group will try to make an impact with local lawmakers to improve opportunities for women here.

"Any woman that represents the communities that are looking at gender equity, human rights, community activism ... community organizing," McKesson said. It can be anybody it does not matter what party you're affiliated with, we just want women who are there doing the work and really want to actually put that spotlight and really say hey we're trying make change in our communities."

McKesson also says she plans to work with women in the community for civic engagement, community organizing and human rights.
