After a surprise announcement that current Omaha Public Schools Superintendent Mark Evans will step down at the end of the school year the school board pushes forward.
OPS board president Lou Ann Goding said this is the biggest role the board has; selecting a new leader for the school district teaching over 50-thousand students and staff.
The tentative timeline goes like this:
Phase 1-sending out requests for proposals to superintendent consulting firms to help chose the next leader of OPS.
November 2nd those proposals are due-and a firm is selected.
December the board will work with firm to finalize job description and announce opening.
Then Phase 2-starts in January with screening of applicants.
In February the board will interview finalists and hold meet and greet sessions. Contract negations begin as well.
Phase 3-in March 2017 the board hires a superintendent then afterwards until July will mostly be the transition period.
But with the election under a month away some board members say that throws a kink in things.
Others think differently saying more time mean better candidates.
Board members Matt Scanlan said this search will be different than then last one because instead of trying to find a change agent they are looking for an implementer of what's already been done.
The board will make all of these decisions.
