Petition to widen Highway 92 gains traction

To expand or not--that's what Nebraska Department of Roads might consider on Highway 92 between the town of Wahoo and west Omaha.

Some say the current 2-lane roads needs to be widened to 4-lanes.

Andrew Rehmann is a creator of a petition to widen the road as he travels to and from Wahoo to western Omaha almost everyday for work and sometimes on weekends. He said sometimes the road can be burdensome to drive on.

“There's a lot of different things, when combined, can make a pretty dicey situation,” said Rehmann.

Such as farm equipment clogging a lane--increased traffic due to due a major business Omaha Steel--more recreational drivers to come to Lake Wanahoo--and during winter—the highway may close down.

Those are some of the reasons Rehmann created an online petition to urge the department of roads to make expanding this road a priority.

According to NDOR the entire project could cost upwards of $123-million dollars for a 4-lane divided highway, with over 15-thousand vehicles driving on the road daily by the year 2035.

Senator Jerry Johnson from Wahoo--agrees the highway should be looked at for widening.

“If we can start putting together a plan so at least we know hey this is down the road, and hopefully its adjustable if things conditions change,” said Johnson.

Especially Johnson says if the road becomes an increased safety concern.

“If there's a way that we can put the 4-lane in or knock off some of the hills, so people don't have to take a risk or 'hey can i get around this vehicle’,” said Johnson.

These projects are all part of the Build Nebraska Act, created five years ago to help fund and prioritize road projects across the state.

NDOR will make its final selections in October.
