LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts says he’ll try to persuade Charles Schwab to maintain a presence in Omaha following news that the online brokerage is buying rival TD Ameritrade and moving the combined company’s headquarters to Texas.
Ricketts said Monday that the announcement “creates significant uncertainty” for thousands of Nebraskans who have worked for TD Ameritrade for years.
Ricketts is the son of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts and a former chief operating officer within the company.
He says he’s anxious to see what the decision means for the people of Nebraska. He says the state can help Schwab succeed with its competitive cost of doing business and its strong workforce.
Losing TD Ameritrade is potentially a major blow for Omaha. Another major employer, Conagra Brands, moved its headquarters out of the city in 2016 although it still has sizeable operations in Omaha.
