An Omaha mother takes her heartbreaking story to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. urging lawmakers to change immigration laws..
Sarah Root's mother Michelle Root testified in front of a congressional sub-committee this morning. Three months ago police say illegal immigrant Eswin Meija crashed into Root in south Omaha, killing her. Mejia bailed out of jail for $5,000 and ICE did not put an immigration hold on Mejia. He has not been seen since. Michelle Root hopes her family's story will lead to changes to the immigration system. "We are a nation of legal immigrants my family like many other Americans have no ill will to people who desire the American Dream, Sarah an American citizen, desired that same dream but it was taken from her" Root told lawmakers.
Root says her daughter is a hero because her organs were donated to save others.
