The Omaha Police Department is investigating a shooting near the Creighton campus at the intersection of 24th and Cuming Streets.

OPD said at 6:09 Sunday morning an adult black male suspect, identified as 26 year-old Kody K. Conley was on foot in the intersection of 24th and Cuming Streets when he pointed a handgun and fired at two occupied vehicles.  The two vehicles were east bound on Cuming Street and stopped at the red traffic light.  One of the vehicles was struck three times.  The other vehicle was struck two times.  The occupants were not injured.

OPD said it appears that Conley indiscriminately shot at the two vehicles without provocation. As Conley fled the scene on foot, he pointed this handgun at a third occupied vehicle that was traveling east on Cuming Street.

After the victims were shot at, they waived down an Omaha Police Officer at 22nd and Cuming Street and reported the shooting.  Other officers were dispatched to the area.  The arriving officers spotted Conley on foot near 28th Plaza south of Burt Street. Conley fled on foot to the east as he crossed the North Freeway towards the Creighton University Campus. Several Omaha Police Officers caught up to Conley as he fled into a corridor on the south side of the Criss Health Sciences building.

When the officers confronted Conley, he was armed with a handgun.  During the confrontation, two Omaha Police Officers discharged their duty rifles.  Conley sustained multiple non-fatal gunshot wounds.

Omaha Fire Medics arrived on scene and provided medical attention to Conley.  Conley was transported to CHI Creighton.  Conley is currently in stable condition and is expected to survive his injuries.  There are no other suspects at large.

A .22 caliber handgun was recovered from Conley at the scene.  The revolver was reported stolen on January 22, 2016.

The officers who discharged their weapons are:

26 year-old Austin Taylor, a 2-year veteran assigned to the Uniform Patrol Bureau, Northeast Precinct.

43 year-old Aaron Anderson, a 12-year veteran assigned to the Uniform Patrol Bureau, Northeast Precinct.

Per Omaha Police Department policy, any officer who discharges his/her firearm that results in injury or death is placed on paid administrative leave pending the Officer Involved Investigations Team and Internal Affairs Unit investigations. Officers Taylor and Anderson have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The Creighton University Public Safety personnel assisted the Omaha Police Department with this investigation.  No Creighton University Public Safety Officers were involved in this incident when the shots were fired by the officers.

This is an on-going investigation.
