Health officials are warning people here in the Omaha metro to limit their time outdoors as smoke from fires in Kansas is coming from the south...
Reporter Miranda Christian has more information about what we need to know. If you step outside today you are going to smell smoke in the air and see a haze in the sky. This is because there is controlled burning going on in Kansas and all that smoke is blowing up this way. The Douglas County Health Department says right now our air quality is in the unhealthy category. They are warning people who have existing lung conditions and those who are young and old to avoid going outside today. Air quality scientist Russell Hadan says "you step outside you smell the smoke you see the smoke your eyes can burn if you do heavy exercise or something like that your lungs can still basically week or you feel weak and fatigue so that's why we those people wait for this to clear out before you do your vigorous exercise you never know if you do have this condition so we'd rather not see you find out if you do have that problem"
Omaha Public Schools along with several other districts have cancelled recess and any outdoor activity. Officials also discourage vigorous exercise or doing things like mowing the lawn..
