Omaha Police shot a vehicle theft suspect at a southeast Omaha apartment complex Thursday evening.

Officers responded to a stolen vehicle call at the apartment complex near 68th and Grover just before 5 p.m.. The suspect barricaded himself into an apartment and refused to come out.  At around 7 p.m. shots were fired and the suspect was hit. Medics transported the suspect to Nebraska Medicine with wounds that are not considered life threatening.

Residents were put out of the complex for hours during this standoff.

"Wait it out I guess, get my son to come and get me. I packed my bags--I asked one of the officers and he said prepare for an evacuation so I did," said Amy McVay.

"They actually ran into my apartment complex with their guns drawn and I'm listening to what floor they are going to and an officer just knocked on my door and told me to get out," said another resident.

Police will release more information Friday.
