An Omaha funeral home and its insurers filed a lawsuit over a fire that destroyed a chapel last January.
The Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler funeral chapel on West Center Street burned on January 26, 2016. The mortuary and Cincinnati Casualty and Cincinnati Indemnity Companies sued Matthews International Corporation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The $5.75 million lawsuit claims Matthews failed to properly rebuild a cremation machine which is blamed for causing the fire. The bodies and cremains of the deceased that were in the burning building were taken to the company's other mortuaries.
The fire injured four people. The funeral home is being rebuilt and should be finished in September.
