Omaha Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by an officer Thursday afternoon.
An officer shot Lance McIntire, 44, was s during a confrontation in the area of 32nd and L Streets just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police say gang unit officers were on patrol in the area, and spotted a vehicle that had fled from them earlier in the day. Officers made contact with the suspects in the vehicle, and during that contact the situation escalated which ended when Detective Dale Thomas fired his weapon. McIntire was taken to Nebraska Medicine where he died from his injuries.
Police say Thomas, who is a seven year veteran of the force, is currently on paid administrative leave pending the Officer-Involved Investigations Team and Internal Affairs investigations. A grand jury will also investigate the incident as required by state law.
McIntire has a lengthy criminal record which includes drug possession, assault and battery, assault by strangulation, theft, and other charges.
