Taylor Royal, the Republican who challenged Mayor Jean Stothert in the primary earlier this year, is looking to run for a different state office in the next election cycle.
According to a Facebook event, Royal is running for State Treasurer and he will formally announce his candidacy Thursday at UNO's Thompson Center.
Royal finished third in the mayoral primary in April, before later endorsing Stothert in the general election in May.
Royal will face competition on the Republican side, State Senator John Murante of Gretna announced his bid in July. Current Treasurer Don Stenberg cannot run again because of term limits.
