Gretna will open two new schools for this school year, Aspen Creek Middle School and Aspen Creek Elementary school that sit off Highway 370.
The population in Gretna just keeps growing, and the district was in need of some new schools.
“It is exciting to be a part of the growth and know people want to move here because of our school system,” said middle school Principal Stacey Deterding said.
On Wednesday, teachers were in the process of setting up their classrooms and Superintendent Kevin Riley said they still have some last minute touches to do on the building.
Everyone is excited to see the doors open at the new schools, “I grew up here and remember this being fields, I am excited though, it is a good thing,” neighbor Melanie VanBlarcom said.
One thing parents need to prepare for is where to drop off their kids, at the middle school parents can enter from 183rd and loop around, and at the elementary school they can enter off Lincoln rd. Parents can walk their kids in on the first day of school at the elementary school.
“Day two we like to start that routine right away of dropping off and letting student come in on their own,” Principal Wendi Kistler said.
Riley said they spent about $45 million for both schools and he said the need was due rapid growth in Gretna.
“We have a campus here, we have land for our second high school as well,” he said.
Next week, parents and kids can see the new schools in an open house, and school starts Thursday.
