“These are two human beings that we are talking about; they have been tragically affected by this situation.  It’s just sad,” said Brad Burks, the Executive Director of Essential Pregnancy Services.

It’s a story that shocked Omaha.  Sixteen-year-old Antonia Lopez is accused of throwing her baby out a second story apartment window shortly after giving birth early Friday morning.  Lopez was booked on one count of felony child abuse resulting in death.  She now faces an adult charge.

“I could only imagine the frightening place that girl was in to make such a drastic choice,” said Kim Schenkelberg, with Nebraska Children’s Home Society.

About 30 minutes before 911 was called, Lopez posted on her public Facebook page saying "Who can do me a huge favor and has a car?”  The context of the post is unclear, but local organizations say if it was help that Lopez needed, they wish she knew there were places to turn.

“It just could have been a different and better outcome,” said Schenkelberg.

Nebraska Children's Home Society offers a free and confidential 24/7 support line.  They also help women find the best option for their baby and themselves.

“Regardless of what the views of society are, if there are different family expectations, then there can be a lot of fear that comes with an unplanned pregnancy,” said Schenkelberg.

Brad Burks, the Executive Director of Essential Pregnancy Services says there is no reason a woman should feel alone during her pregnancy.

“They don't want to be judged. They want to be loved and they want to be supported,” said Burks.

EPS is another local free and confidential pregnancy resource center.  They provide ultra sounds, pregnancy classes and give women a chance to earn credits towards diapers and baby clothes.

“There are organizations that are here to help you and support you and will love you no matter what the circumstance is,” said Burks.

You can call Nebraska Children's Home Society 24/7 at 877.420.4747.

There are three EPS locations around town: 6220 Maple St., 3029 N. 93rd St. and 908 W. Mission Ave., Bellevue, NE. 68005
