Volunteers help those in need for Thanksgiving

Posted

It’s a season to give thanks, but for many, that’s difficult when they struggle just to get the necessities of life. The challenge will get a little easier, thanks to volunteer work of many around the area Wednesday.

The Trinity Cathedral in downtown Omaha feed over a hundred people a Thanksgiving dinner for lunch.

The group from St. Martha church was the ones who did the cooking and serving, they had 10 turkeys to pass out and plenty of deserts to choose from.

“We did 10 pies on Sunday and had 6 donated, so 16 pies total,” said Kyle Kirby with the church.

A group of kids with St. Martha where responsible for handing out the feast and plenty of gravy to go with it, “I think it’s really nice we are helping people and we are letting people have this big thanksgiving dinner,” said Abby Ensley.

The church said having the kids help is the perfect way for them to give back to the community.

“What a great way for them to learn the principals of service this is a great way to see people outside their comfort zone, people they wouldn’t normally encounter,” said Michael Duffy with Trinity Cathedral.

The Salvation Army is also preparing to give back to the Community this Thanksgiving by delivering about 1,600 meals to families on Thursday with their 24th annual Turkey Fest.

“We want no one to be alone and no one to have a holiday they would dread so we are trying to provide that holiday cheer for people,” said Major Todd Thielke.

He said it takes a lot to prepare for a Thanksgiving meal, let alone 1,600 of them, so having the boy scouts help with the cookies helps them and the boys.

“It helps teach the next generation the ability to take care of their neighbor and to give families, families really love that aspect of that.”

The Turkey Fest will start early Thursday  morning with deliveries starting around 9:30am.
