What it takes to be a lunch lady

Movies, TV shows and songs about lunch ladys have many people changing their title to "school nutrition professional," but Sharon Schaefer at Gretna Public Schools says she loves her title.

"A lunch lady is a keeper of things, a knower of people and somebody that is strong." said Schaefer.

Schaefer says a lot of thought goes into what ends up on your kid's plate.

"How can I design my cafeteria, design my menu, design my marketing in a way that would appeal to a teenager, a middle schooler and an elementary child," said Schaefer.

She says a lot of psychology goes into giving kids a good lunch.

"As the dining experience goes on, you might not know it as the customer, but your brain is more engaged in your eating if there's more than three flavors, three textures, and three colors," said Schaefer.

And Schaefer says a clean plate means everything, "We're here to support education. We send our kids to school to learn and if a child's hungry they can't learn."
