Las Vegas Strip bar receipt going viral over $3 charge for 'rocks'

A receipt from Bally's Las Vegas is gaining a lot of attention for showing a $3 charge for "rocks," making many think the bar was charging for ice.

But after asking bartenders, they said that's not the case. They said the charge is for what they call a "rocks bump," meaning an additional charge for ordering a drink on the rocks as opposed to a mixed drink because you're adding the equivalent of almost an extra shot of liquor.

Many Las Vegas bars and restaurants, like La Comida, said that's very common. But in many cases, the price will be included in the drink and not itemized separately on a receipt like it was in this case.

But the Bally's receipt sparked a conversation on where the line should be drawn regarding added fees on the Strip, especially after many resorts added paid parking in the past year.

"I don't know at what point something will transpire that will make people say, 'You know what, I'm going to go to another city,'" said Scott Roeben of VitalVegas.com.

With record visitors still coming to Las Vegas, he said resorts have no incentive to stop adding more fees because the appeal of Vegas is so strong to visitors.

"Bottom lines are healthy and they're going up, but at some point it may come back to bite them," Roeben said.
