Halloween gives us the chance to dress in the costume of our choice, but it’s important to be mindful of who and what you’re portraying.

Actress Hilary Duff has come under fire for an allegedly offensive outfit she sported at the annual Casamigos Halloween party in Los Angeles Friday evening, Time reports.

Sooooo the fake gun for my pilgrim costume came. Don't think it's quite big enough ??

Duff dressed as a sexy pilgrim, while her boyfriend, trainer Jason Walsh, sported a Native American costume. The Internet was divided, with some criticizing the couple’s outfit choice, while others defended it.

Either way, both Duff and Walsh took to social media Sunday, issuing apologies to anyone offended by the costumes.

“I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume,” Duff wrote in tweet. “It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my [heart emoji] sorry.”

Walsh echoed the apology, writing on Instagram, “I meant no disrespect. I only have admiration for the indigenous people of America.”
