Glamping (glamorous camping) sites and a drive in movie theater are just two features coming to the 26 acre site of Sokol park this summer.
"We want the word to get out. We don't want it to stay hidden," Brandon Miller, park owner said.
The peaceful park, in its hay day, was always busy with families, picnics, and partiers. Over time it's gotten quiet. Until Miller, a musician and Hullabaloo concert creator needed a space. A friend recommended the quiet Sokol acreage.
"He asked had you heard of Sokol park? And I said no. Which is everyone's reaction, you know, and we're trying to change that."
Miller is hoping to open folks minds to the space. He wants to bring it back to its former glory, out of respect for the history. In the late 1800's the Czech Sokol movement made it's way to Omaha. Here at the park, men spent time the times in dorms in between physical, moral, and intellectual training.
"In the 50s they would do polka dances and then 60's through 80's it was the place for company picnics," Miller said.
There's still a few relics of the past on the property: an old ferris wheel, a sign from also Czech Bohemian cafe, writing on a back wall discovered during renovations.
"There's even handwritten notes, stories and stuff," he said.
As Sokol moves to the future, this summer, there will be more concerts, a glamping site, and a drive in movie. Doors will open at 7p.m. with the movie starting at dusk.
