It is the start of the Easter holiday weekend and thousands of Catholics and Protestants all over the world are celebrating. Here in the Omaha metro, you may have seen a parade of people walking up Dodge this morning with a giant cross.

The annual event is conducted by local members of the Catholic group Communion and Liberation and co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of Omaha.

Archbishop George Lucas led the opening invocation in the church. He said it's important to remember today's significance in the Easter season.

"This is the day when Christians all remember the death of savior Jesus Christ," Lucas said, "And people find a variety of ways to remember and reflect spiritual truth of our salvation."

While some are getting ready to celebrate the holiday weekend, others are feeling the need.

Dozens celebrated the start of the holiday earlier Friday at the Open Door Mission with a brunch.

More than 150 volunteers are working to make sure everyone had a holiday meal. This weekend the ODM will also give out Easter baskets to children and care kits to adults.
