Creighton baseball continues its hot streak heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Bluejays hosted a weekend series against Georgetown (24-26, 7-8 Big East) in a Big East Conference matchup.
Creighton started the three game series with a 6-2 win Friday. Bluejay starting pitcher Rollie Lacy picked up his conference-leading eighth win of the season, allowing just two runs on four hits in six innings. Friday’s win gave Creighton their best start through 40 games since 1983.
Creighton’s pitching success continued Saturday as the Bluejays earned a 4-0 shutout victory. Junior starting pitcher Jeff Albrecht put together a career-high seven inning shutout performance, allowing just two hits and two walks. Senior catcher Matt Gandy and junior Nicky Lopez both contributed three hits in the victory. The win solidified Creighton’s spot in the Big East Tournament.
Creighton couldn’t hold on Sunday for the series sweep as they suffered a 3-2 loss, snapping its seven-game winning streak. The game was knotted at 2-2 heading into the top of the ninth when Georgetown’s Richie O'Reilley singled to centerfield, then scored on a double by Beau Hall. Creighton closer David Gerber allowed one run on two hits in the ninth as he picked up the loss.
The series win leaves Creighton (32-10, 10-2 Big East) atop the Big East standings, with Xavier (22-26, 9-3 Big East) just behind. This series marks the 11th consecutive weekend series win for the Bluejays. Creighton hasn’t lost a weekend series since February when it lost to Fresno State in the first series of the season.
Next up, the Bluejays travel to Wichita, Kansas to take on former Missouri Valley rival Wichita State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
