LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — Sophomore running back Maurice Washington is not currently with the Nebraska football team, Huskers head coach Scott Frost confirmed on Monday. Frost says as far as he knows, Washington is still currently attending classes. Washington did not practice last week or today (Monday). Frost said Washington is not in the team's immediate plans but his long term status with the program is uncertain.
"I wouldn't do anything different," Frost said. "I wish things would be a little different. Coach Osborne was this way: he wasn't quick to crumble kids up and throw them away. Some of the kids that are in those situations, if they're gone out of this program, that road doesn't lead to very many good places. So as long as I'm here I'm going to try to help these young men as much as I can. That's the promise I make to their parents when I sit in their living room and tell them we're going to try to help them no matter what."
Washington was suspended the first half of the season opener & the first half of the Northwestern game this year. He was not listed on the depth chart for this Saturday's game against Indiana but was still listed on the roster.
"There's certain things that they if they do I'm not going to help them," Frost said. "They're on their own. But I want what's best for all these guys. So we're going to continue to try to help them as long as they can be helped and there always comes a point where you have to throw your hands up and say we tried. But until then, we want to do what's right by them. I think that's the right thing to do. We certainly tried to do everything we can for Mo and hopefully it works out well."
The former four-star recruit still faces charges in Californiathat allege he sent a cell phone video to a former girlfriend of her performing a sex act. Washington did not film the video nor was he in it. Frost said Washington's status with the team is not related to those charges.
Washington was the team's 3rd leading rusher with 298 yards and a touchdown this season. He had 880 all-purpose yards and four TD in 2018.
