One of the Husker football players who kneeled during the national anthem at a game last month took to Twitter tonight to share his thoughts about the protest that continues to spark debate.
"Ideals" and "realities" are two completely different things...

@Rose_IveyNB15 Every team in college football has "ideals" or words they live by, that their team "wants" to play/be like...

@Rose_IveyNB15 if their actions doesnt show it.. do those "ideals" matter? No they are just words that hold no value in "reality"

@Rose_IveyNB15 & when we don't do that, there are plenty of people there waiting to tell us we are not living up to the Blackshirt standard
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 people who criticize us about our defense constantly do so why? Because they respect the tradition, they love the tradition..
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 it's not because they hate it.. it's not because they are anti-blackshirt.. they just want to see our defense live up
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 to things we say we are.. fast, physical, doing it longer than he opponent, and when we don't we need to be reminded..
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 this is how I feel about America.. we can say we have ideals or the things we say this or that means but..
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 if we are not living up to those things, it is the job of those who respect and love this country to call foul to
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 the things that disrespect the ideals we have or that do not truly represent the things we say we are about..
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 THIS NEEDS TO BE EVERYONES ISSUE !! If I cannot say that clear enough hear me !!
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 that is why it bothers me so much to hear comments like: why are u mad? White ppl get killed by cops more..
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 if that's the case, why are you not out protesting with me? That tells me there is more to it.. that it is not so cut and dry
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 and that's looking at flat statistics which don't take into account population discrepancy between blacks and whites..
— Michael Rose-Ivey (@Rose_IveyNB15) October 6, 2016
@Rose_IveyNB15 i am saying again.. I am not anti- police, I am not anti-military, I am not anti- United States.. I just want better..

Michael Rose-Ivey and two other players kneeled down during the national anthem before the game at Northwestern last month. The protest came on the heels of a similar protest by 49ers player Colin Kaepernick. The aim to protest racial injustice and police brutality.
Rose-Ivey was slated to meet with Governor Pete Ricketts this week. Rose-Ivey asked for a meeting to discuss the issue after Governor Ricketts called the protest disrespectful. We do not know when the meeting will take place.
