Nebraska Girls State Basketball: No. 2 Omaha Westside upsets No. 1 Millard South in the state finals

The battle for the Class A state championship came down to No. 1 Millard South and No. 2 Omaha Westside Saturday night. After missing out on the state tournament last year the Warriors upset the Patriots, 55-44, for the title.

The Warriors started the game with a 7-0 run to take an early lead, by the end of the first quarter Westside doubled the Patriots score with a 14-7 lead. Westside held Millard South to just four points in the first quarter, heading into the locker room with a 16 point lead. 

In the first half Omaha Westside's Caroline Leibel led the Warriors with eight points and Millard South's Bailey Urban led the Patriots with four points.

Westside had a slow start to the third quarter allowing the Patriots to cut their lead to 10 but Westside's Quinn Weidemann hit a three-pointer to get things rolling. By the end of the third quarter the Warriors held a 37-25 lead.

The Warriors sealed the win in the fourth quarter holding a steady lead throughout the eight minutes. Westside's Weidemann and Ella Wedergren finished in the double-figures, Weidemann led the Warriors with 18 points while Wedergren followed with 10.
