GRETNA, Neb. (KMTV) The Gretna football team will make the move up to Class A this season with a new coach. Former assistant Mike Kayl takes over after Dave Shrader retired last year.
The Dragons slayed their Class B schedule in 2017 going a perfect 9-0 in the regular season.
"It's going to be a challenge," Kayl said. "Class B has real good competition. Class A the challenge is week in and week out. We just got to be ready to go."
Gretna got all the way to the state semifinals last year before falling to Omaha Skutt by a single point.
"Coming off last year we got confidence," said senior cornerback and receiver Caden Opfer. "We're just going to go out there and play and try to make a name for ourselves."
The Dragons return five starters on both sides of the ball, including quarterback and Nebraska baseball commit Quinn Mason.
"We've been working hard," said Mason. "We can compete with some Class A teams and make some noise."
Gretna gets the party started Thursday August 23 at Millard South.
