For the last few years, Creighton Prep and Omaha South have fought for the Class A boys’ soccer championship. With two talented teams, this final game has become a much anticipated rivalry game for both schools.

This year, the South Omaha community was ready to take the title home.

“We just have so much pride. And between these two teams that have history since 2013 and the whole rivalry, it’s super important for South to take it home this year,” says Alejandra Escobar, a student at Omaha South.

“Go Packers, go!” echoed throughout the stadium, with fans in red cheering enthusiastically after Omaha South scored its first and only goal, which led to the Packers’ 1-0 victory.

For Jose Marquez, today’s game had emotional value. He played for Omaha South in 2013, the last time the Packers beat Creighton Prep for the state championship.

“I believe this team deserves it as much as we did. They may even be better,” says Marquez. “But being at the state tournament from a different perspective, from a fan perspective, it’s awesome. I love the environment and the atmosphere. It’s great vibes. And the community’s support is indescribable.”

One barbershop owner says he’s had a busy week getting the players and fans ready for the big game.

“The last couple of days, we’ve been extremely busy. Everybody wants to look good for the game and support,” says Beauchamp, owner of Evolution Barbershop.

Omaha South defeated Creighton Prep in the Class A final soccer state championship 1-0. The game was held at Morrison Stadium at Creighton University.  The Packers finished the season with a 21-2 record.
