OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — A Place At Home is a homecare company that aims to keep seniors and disabled parties at their homes.
"Rather than have to move out of their community where they may be away from family or a little less comfortable than their own home," said executive director Kris Perkins.
Perkins says her business assists elderly people with anything non medical.
"We can assist them with getting in and out of bed, transferring from one location to another, keeping an eye on them so they aren't falling," she said.
Especially since the elderly are at higher risk for contracting COVID-19, the company has implemented extra precautions when dealing with patients.
"We put a policy in place right away for our caregivers, letting them know of the new changes," said Perkins. "They were going to be wearing gloves, they were going to be issued masks, they need to be washing their hands consistently. We put something in place that if they were to travel outside of the Omaha area, they needed to self-quarantine for 14 days and could not work in a clients home until they had been 14 days without any symptoms."
Because many families are opting out of having their elderly relatives inside of nursing homes, A Place At Home has seen an uptick in business during the pandemic.
"We've lost very hours of clients, and we've actually gained clients through this because some children went and pulled their parents out of communities, but they couldn't handle the burden fully on their own," Perkins said. "So that's when they called us and brought us into the homes, so it's actually grown us a little bit through COVID in taking those steps."
Perkins says she expects business to stay busy during the next 12 to 18 months, with the biggest focus of keeping patients safe.
"When our caregivers can go in and pick up their groceries for them, and they don't have to leave their house for anything other than maybe a doctor's appointment, we're keeping them as safe as we possibly can."
