Marco Shutters and Closets is open. The business designs, manufactures, and installs custom indoor shutters and blinds.
It's owned and run by Mike Herman and his wife Linda and has been serving customers in Omaha for 20 years.
"About 40% of our business is shutters, about 40% is closets, and another 20% we do with blinds," said Mike Herman.
Herman says their work is customized to each customer's needs.
"We're able to walk into a home and talk to them about, you know, they call us and say, my closet is terrible and is not organized, it doesn't work for me, what can you do? I'm able to walk into their homes, discuss, what is it you don't like, and it's always easier to solve the puzzle when you have all the pieces, and so to get into their home and see how many shoes they have, how many slacks they have, how do they hang their slacks, do they fold their jeans and sweaters, do they want to put them in drawers? Those kinds of things so we can customize that closet to work out for them."
Since they enter people's homes regularly for work, they've adjusted how their staff enters homes due to COVID-19.
"Our installers will wear masks, they sanitize their hands, and then everything we install. We use sanitizing wipes with that and wipe everything down before we leave," Herman said.
They also have their design consultants take daily temperature checks. And continue to have their showroom open to provide examples of their work to customers. There they have hand sanitizer available for customers along with an area to wash hands.
With the changes Herman has made in order to keep customers and staff safe from the virus spread, he's noticed a change in customer needs.
"We had one person that works from home a lot and he's on a lot of video conferences," Herman said. "And he didn't like to have the look of the wood blinds that stood behind me. He wanted to have a shutter put in so it was more of a presence for him. We have some people who are working from home permanently and they've been told they're not coming back to the office and are going to work from home. So with our closet business, we've put in home offices for them."
With more people working from home, Herman says business for him has been steady.
"We did get the Payment Protection Loan and through that we've been able to keep all of our employees and full-time schedules," Herman said. "We've been very lucky that we've had a lot of repeat business from customers and also a lot of referrals and that's been a great support and we appreciate that."
